Compare work relevant to your project
For a colour composition, look at colour work; for a portrait, look at portraits; for rework, look for relevant cover-ups. Study both the complete composition on the body and close details. A single close-up does not show the whole piece, and an impressive subject does not suit every size. Save a few specific links and explain what appeals to you, so the conversation can move beyond “I like the look”.
Ask about the stage of the work and its artist
A photograph may not show whether a piece is fresh, in progress or healed. If this matters to your comparison, ask the artist to identify its stage and share available healed examples of similar work. Do not assume every portfolio photograph is a healed result without a caption. For a complex rework, ask whether before-and-after photographs are available and who completed each stage.
Look for clear communication and terms
Before booking, discuss your idea, possible limits, dimensions, price and design approval. Confirm who will perform the work, the appointment venue and which dates are actually available. City names on a website do not confirm a particular location. Ask about workspace arrangements and aftercare instructions. For a cover-up, send a photograph of the existing tattoo: a promise to cover any design without assessment does not explain what your project involves.
What to send the artist
- Links to work relevant to your style and project.
- Questions about the artist, the stage of the work and available photo angles.
- Idea, placement, dimensions and an existing-tattoo photo for a cover-up.
- City, dates and questions about pricing, design approval and booking.
Commission questions
- Does every portfolio photograph show a healed tattoo?
- Do not assume so. Ask the artist about the specific piece and request available healed examples.
- Can I choose an artist on price alone?
- Price matters to your budget, but compare it alongside the scope, relevant portfolio, terms and clarity of communication. Start by discussing your specific project.
