Start with an idea and clear references
Explain who the painting is for and what matters about it. Mall Galleries also begins with the future owner’s ideas. For a portrait from photographs, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters recommends choosing the main reference image first. Add a description of the desired character and examples from our portfolio.
Agree on communication
Before work begins, discuss size, medium, subject and the scope of the order. Ask when you can discuss progress and which changes are possible. If progress photographs or a particular contact method matter, mention this beforehand. Keep the agreed terms in writing so both sides understand the intended painting.
Discuss receiving the work separately
Give your country, city and preferred arrival date. Confirm handover or shipping to your destination, packaging, framing and overall cost. Creating and transporting a painting are separate stages. International delivery is only confirmed after a direct discussion; arrangements depend on the work and destination.
