Size and subject: compare the scope
Specify canvas dimensions in centimetres, the number of people in a portrait, the background and important details. A single portrait against a quiet background and a multi-figure composition require different discussions. For an interior, measure the available wall and its distance from furniture. If you have not chosen a size, suggest two alternatives so the artist can explain how composition and scope may change. Portfolio examples help establish a direction; they are not an automatic price list for a new commission.
Clarify what the quote includes
Ask about the support and medium, dimensions, composition approval, framing, packaging and delivery separately. Do not assume a frame, shipping or documents are included. Share the destination city: delivery possibilities and terms are agreed for each painting. Before confirming, bring the details together in one message: what will be created, the agreed price, how the result will be reviewed and which items are charged separately.
Discuss a budget while keeping the idea
Explain your priority: likeness in a portrait, a meaningful subject, expressive colour or the scale of the painting in a room. If the budget is limited, ask about a different size, a quieter background or a different level of detail. These options are discussed with the artist rather than priced automatically. For a gift, share your desired arrival date early: making the work, preparing it for shipment and delivery are distinct parts of the plan.
What to send the artist
- Subject, main reference and important details.
- Preferred dimensions or two possible sizes.
- A budget guide with its currency.
- Destination city, desired arrival date and framing preferences.
Commission questions
- Can I ask about the price before I have a sketch?
- Start with your idea, dimensions and references. The final price is confirmed after the scope is agreed; an initial discussion does not create an order.
- Should I choose an existing painting or commission a new one?
- An existing work lets you discuss a finished result and its current availability. A commission starts with your idea and needs agreement on composition and timing. Compare the subject, size, budget and desired arrival date.
